PROPERTY PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE DRONE

Drone aerial photo and video in Buckinghamshire. Aerial imagery is an effective way to promote a property or business.

As a CAA licensed drone pilot, I am qualified to fly drones commercially for aerial photo and video work. The drone is an additional tool and used when it can enhance and support the project. Of course, it takes center stage if that project is to shoot a property etc. If you have a project such as selling a property or building inspection etc, please get in touch to discuss your ideas.

Enter the Drone

The dynamics all change when a drone is brought in. With planning and imagination, they can produce amazing views of any subject.

Building Inspections

Building inspections can also be carried out. For example, roof, gutters and chimneys where damage has been caused by bad weather. The overall task is a lot easier. Firstly, there is no need for ladders or scaffolding. Secondly, they reduce the risk to someone working at great heights. Thirdly, with careful planning, the work can be carried out in a fraction of the time. High resolution photos and video can be taken. Consequently, these can be examined in detail by professional eyes to make more accurate assessments.

Drone versatility

Drone Likes

Drones are very environment friendly. For instance, powered by batteries means a small carbon footprint.  Therefore, no dirty exhaust fumes. So much quieter than helicopters. They are quick to set up. As a result of their onboard anti-collision sensors, risks of accidents are reduced. Above all, they save time and money.

Drone Dislikes

Drones are like humans. They don’t like bad weather. Rain, high winds and storms. If any of these are happening, they generally can’t fly. Some drones are ‘weatherproof’, but they are not waterproof. So it is better to be indoors wishing you were flying than the other way round.

The example shows the Jardines de Nivaria Hotel in Tenerife, Canary Islands. Aerial footage shows the Hotel before renovation and eight months after. This was combined with monthly timelapses. The hotel posted these ‘progress’ films on social media. As a result, this kept the owners, architects and clients informed on the progress of the entire renovation.

I produced a general overview of the hotel. This included a number of timelapses. They were filmed at various times of the day. This video shows how drone and land based footage can be combined with the timelapse sequences. The result is a view of the entire hotel and facilities showing where it is in relation to the sea and beaches.

Preparation

Prior to a flight, detailed planning takes place. Points to consider are: setting drone take-off and landing areas. Informing local police. Knowing the number of the nearest hospital. Is there a helicopter service which may enter the area? Checking airspace restrictions. Obtaining landowner permissions. Measuring safe flying distances. Risk factors of buildings and people not involved with the operation. Weather conditions. Local topography. Possible obstructions like tall trees, powerlines and cables. The list can be long depending on the nature of the flight, location, type of drone and public access etc.

Property photos

Photographing property is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. It might be a large hotel, factory or school or a small one bed flat. The same aim applies to them all and that is to show them off to their best advantage.

I take drone aerial photos and video of property in and around Buckinghamshire. The drone complements my graphic design, photo and video skills. Above all, it expands my capabilities as a photographer. As a result of its versatility, it opens up my creativity.

A typical brief

Shoot stills and video including aerials. Produce a promotional video. In addition, design a brochure, flyers and listings for print, window advertising and websites.

For an estate agent scenario, drones enhance the service to clients. This can be performing an inspection which may discover situations not noticeable from the ground. The buyer can easily see the property layout and surrounding area.
